I have just finished reading the Shack. What a fascinating book.
It tells the story of a man called Mac who endures incredible hardship in his life. After a tragic event (I won't say what because I wouldn't want to ruin it), he ends up broken, bitter and angry at God.
And then something amazing happens... he meets God.
A lot of people do not understand why I believe what I believe. I can understand that. Sometimes it even feels fanciful to me. When I was young I believed I had all of the answers, that I understood why the belief I had made sense and what it meant to be a Christian.
As I have gotten older my faith has changed. It has shifted from an understanding of God to a deep relationship with Him. I know this will not make sense to those who do not share that relationship. I no longer worry about having answers. In fact I have less now than 15 years ago. But I have something more tangible, more solid. I know God.
People have a lot of preconceptions about Christians. Some of those preconceptions are born out of the media, others from history and still others reinforced by christians themselves. However, for me my faith is not about dos and don'ts. Its about relationship.
So what has this to do with the shack. Well, if you are curious about where my faith comes from and what it means to me to be a christian then read this book.
Do I agree with every word... no. It is fiction and occasionally it strays from what I believe. However, at the centre of this book is the God I believe in. A God that loves me unconditionally and does not want to Lord it over me. Instead he wants only to serve me. He is a God that is ultimately good and completely loving. Although I do not understand everything he does, I know he is working out an amazing purpose in this world and I look forward to seeing it complete.
Some of you will be reading this thinking I am insane. That is fine. You have every right to think whatever you want. However, if you are curious about what and how I can believe, then this is the book to read.
